The Handshake that Never Happened!
Has “Jaunty Jay” slowed to a normal pace or are the other Goldminers traveling at lightning speed? That was the question pondered by the 21 people including our guest, Dennis Jones at Saturday’s meeting. If Richard Archer had been there (which he WASN’T), he could have clocked the speed with his “golf ball radar gun,” but of course that didn’t happen so we’re left to wonder. This we do know. Jay must be exhausted because as people made a mad dash from the lectern to their seats, Jay was in hot pursuit with his hand stretched forward in the ready-to-shake position…but it never happened! A good thing did happen, however, Sonny Tolbert joined our group! Welcome Sonny, we look forward to knowing you. Al Minter opened the meeting and Pam Taylor gave us our first thought. Bob Boylan as Toastmaster called on Kim Jackson for a joke, Kirk Carr for a word and recognized Matthew Charity as Ah Bell/Ballot Counter and Lee Johnston as Timer. It was after he introduced Jay Nodine as Table Topics Master that the chase began. Jennie, Gerry, Sonny, Lee and Pam all responded and as far as I could tell, he couldn’t catch any of them for a hand shake! Bob Boylan had much better luck with Bob Cannon, Joyce Preston, John Shepherd and myself as speakers. Master Evaluator, Sandy Boucher-Bessant called on Sam Mullis, Belinda Dublin, Alex Porter and Brian Woolf for speech evaluations. While ballots were counted, Al announced the Ice Cream and Tall Tale Contests at Bakers Creek on July 12 and the Banquet and New Officer Installation on July 19. Stay tuned next week for more information about these events. At just the right moment, Matthew stepped up with awards for Betty Walker voted best speaker; Brian Woolf for best evaluator and Sonny Tolbert for best table topic responder. The next “just right” moment will occur at 8:30 next Saturday when the Miners Meet to Mingle for the first time in June…hope you will be part of it, look forward to seeing you. Somewhat respectfully submitted,
